Lily White Apiary: in pursuit of the perfect honey

A creative project driven by dedication and research, crafting a distinctive brand identity and packaging in pursuit of the perfect honey.

About the project

Lily White Apiary is a branding and packaging design project for a small honey producer based in Co. Kildare, Ireland. The project focuses on the dedication and research behind the pursuit of the perfect honey, translating care, precision and craftsmanship into a clear and distinctive visual identity. The goal was to reflect the brand’s commitment to quality and process, balancing tradition with a contemporary design approach. This is a personal project, developed as a freelance designer in 2025.

Mission

The mission of the Lily White Apiary project is to create a brand identity that reflects the dedication and research behind the pursuit of the perfect honey. The goal is to design a visual experience that communicates care, precision and respect for the craft, highlighting the commitment to quality at every stage of the process. By balancing tradition with a contemporary design approach, the mission is to express authenticity, attention to detail and the quiet excellence of a small-scale Irish producer.

Challenges

The challenges of the Lily White Apiary project included translating the dedication and meticulous process of a small Irish honey producer into a clear and distinctive visual identity. Designing labels and packaging for different jar sizes, bulk containers, candles, and business cards required careful attention to consistency, hierarchy, and readability across formats. Another key challenge was to convey the brand’s craftsmanship and pursuit of the perfect honey without resorting to clichéd natural imagery, creating a design that feels both authentic and refined. This approach aimed to highlight the quality, care, and precision inherent to the brand while delivering a cohesive and memorable identity.

Research

Research was a fundamental part of the Lily White Apiary project, enabling a deep understanding of the brand’s values, the production process, and the uniqueness of each honey variety—Soft Set, Blossom, Ivy, and Heather. The process involved exploring the local heritage of Co. Kildare, the craft behind small-scale honey production, and the technical requirements for packaging across multiple formats, including jars of different sizes, bulk containers, candles, and business cards. This thorough investigation was essential to create a brand identity that reflects dedication, quality, and precision, while providing flexible solutions for updating variable information such as batch numbers and harvest dates.

Identity System

The Lily White Apiary identity system creates a clear and refined visual language, combining elements such as the logo, typography, and color palette to communicate dedication, craftsmanship, and a sense of calm and relaxation inspired by nature.

The Logo

The Lily White Apiary logo was designed to reflect the brand’s close connection to bees, honey, and its place of origin in Co. Kildare, Ireland. The client requested the name Lily White Apiary, alongside a clear reference to beekeeping and nature. The logo represents a bee whose body is shaped by an elegant, custom-drawn letter “e”, referencing Eddie, the owner, while the wings are stylized calla lilies, directly connected to the brand name. This combination creates a distinctive mark that blends personal identity, natural symbolism, and refined craftsmanship into a single, cohesive symbol.

Colors & Fonts

The color palette for Lily White Apiary is inspired by nature and the quiet elegance of honey production. The deep green #6D7958 reflects the natural environment of Co. Kildare and conveys a sense of calm, balance, and connection to the land. The soft gold #CDB170 recalls the warmth and preciousness of honey, adding a refined and luminous accent to the identity. Together, these colors create a visual language that feels both grounded and elegant, highlighting the value and care behind each product.

The choice of typography follows the same approach, favoring an elegant and refined font that reinforces the brand’s premium character while remaining clear and readable across all applications. This balance supports a calm, confident identity that communicates quality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail.

Graphic Collateral

The graphic collateral includes honey packaging, labels, stickers, and business cards, all designed to reflect the brand’s dedication, craftsmanship, and refined visual identity.

Business Card

The business cards are designed to reflect the simplicity and refinement of the Lily White identity. A deep green background recalls the brand’s connection to nature, while the logo is placed on the front as a clear and recognizable mark. The back features only the essential information, laid out with clarity and balance. This minimal approach reinforces the brand’s calm and confident character. Every detail is reduced to what truly matters, allowing the identity to speak through restraint and consistency.

The Packaging

The honey packaging system includes four labels, one for each variety, designed with a clean and minimal approach. Each label features a stylized illustration of the landscape of Co. Kildare in the background, creating a subtle connection to the place of origin. Color is used to clearly distinguish the varieties: Blossom, Ivy, and Heather feature a white background with colored typography and graphic elements, using gold, light green, and violet respectively, while Soft Set stands out with a deep green background and white text. The labels were adapted to both standard jars and 1 kg formats, maintaining consistency across sizes. Essential information is clearly displayed, with selected fields left editable to allow the producer to manually add batch and date details, reflecting the brand’s small-scale production. A built-in guarantee seal and a single die-cut shape ensure ease of application and coherence across the entire range.
